Instant Pot vs. Other Electric Pressure Cookers

(Updated 7/2/19)

We have found that all of our electric pressure cookers tend to cook similarly and we highly recommend them all. Currently we have the following Electric Pressure Cookers working in our test kitchen:

While all our units pressure cook great, some units come with non-stick coating and others come with stainless steel pots. If an electric pressure cooker is a long term investment for you, this may be a major consideration. Once the non-stick coating scratches the pot insert will have to be replaced. We have already had to replace one of our Foodi pots due to a very unfortunate mashed potato incident. While the stainless steel pots may be a bit more of a pain in the short term, they may pay off in the long term. We have found our stainless steel pots easily clean up with a little bit of Bar Keepers Friend.

However, if you are in the market for an air fryer too, you might consider the units that come with air fryers built in. Despite the non-stick pots, we LOVE the Ninja Foodi because it has an incredible air fryer built into the unit. We love having one unit that can do so many things well.

Electric Pressure Cooker Sweet Potatoes Recipe Notes:

  • My potatoes we pretty large– but not the jumbo ones you sometimes find at the grocery store. If you are using really large sweet potatoes, you will want to increase your time.
  • I cooked these on the vegetable setting for 16 minutes and then used quick release. You can also cook on manual high pressure for 16 minutes with quick release. Regardless what you choose, turn off the warming setting and remove from heat immediately.
  • If you are using an 8-quart Instant Pot, you may need to use a half cup more liquid to make sure your Instant Pot will come up to pressure.

I have the Farberware pressure cooking and to use it manually just go to the setting that times closest to what you want to cook such as number 6 for chicken which auto sets for 20 minutes. Use the plus or minus sign to add or subtract minutes. setting 7 sets for 8 minutes so choose that and add or subtract minutes as you wish.

I think the Farberware pressure cooker uses different pressures for different cycles. You’re best off using the add/subtract time based on the item that you are cooking.
Example, the slow cooker setting I don’t think uses any pressure. The sear/roast setting can be used either open (no pressure) or closed (a low pressure setting).
I think next in order of pressure from lowest to highest, is vegetable, rice, chicken, then bean, which is definitely the highest pressure setting.
I’ve been using this as a rule of thumb & generally get good results.

Hi Denise- You can, but in my experience they take a bit longer. I am still working on my recommendation. But even at 18 minutes mine were not fluffy like I like them. I need to try again…
