Our 10ft moving truck (the smallest truck you can also tow your car behind) is used by customers who are moving a studio or 1 bedroom apartment. The 10ft truck is our smallest box truck rental available for long distance One-Way moves and local In-Town moves.

Equipment scheduling is based on available time frames ranging from one hour up to a 24-hour rental period. Some locations do, however, offer multiple day In-Town rentals on our trailer fleet. Check with your local U-Haul center or independent dealer for exact regulations.

In-Town Rental Cost Breakdown

Mileage rates vary based on a number of factors and may change, even daily (rates are lowest Sunday through Thursday). But in general, average mileage fees are between $.59 and $.99 per mile driven.

Budget Truck Rental is the cheapest moving truck option due to its all-inclusive rates. It gave us the lowest quote of the truck rental options we reviewed here. U-Haul is a close second for affordability and offers more truck size options than Budget.

Space. Ten feet may not sound like a long enough truck to fit your whole life into, but you can fit much more than you think. If you have larger items to move, such as couches, mattresses or desks, along with your many boxes, there is plenty of room to do so.

Queen – Cargo Van, 10′ and up moving trucks, and 5'x8′ cargo trailers and up. King – 10′ and up moving trucks, and a 6'x12′ cargo trailer. California King – 10′ and up moving trucks, and a 6'x12′ cargo trailer.

Load your heaviest items first. Whether you're a DIY or professional mover, this usually means furniture goes in before boxes, unless you have large, heavy boxed items such as a TV or a floor mirror. Place dressers, chairs, appliances, couches and other large items against the back wall. Make sure they remain upright.

Fill Every Space: A packed moving truck will prevent items from shifting. Look for gaps between furniture, and fill in every open space with furniture pads, or filling materials.

Lock It Down

Your best bet for keeping your moving truck safe is to make it difficult to access. Purchase or rent chains and padlocks to secure the rear of the truck so thieves can't get in, or at least not without great effort and noise.

How far can a U-Haul go on a tank of gas? ›

The quick answer: U-Haul Moving Trucks generally operate on unleaded gasoline. In rare cases, your equipment may run on LPG (or propane) autogas, or in even rarer cases, diesel.

Expert-Verified Answer. The cost of gas to travel 1200 miles is $183.33. The gas required to travel 500 miles is 27.8 gallons, 700 miles is 38.9 gallons and to travel for 5 hours is 275 miles.

Your truck will be ready an hour before your pick up time. Complete the online Live Verification Approval process. This will include taking photos of your drivers license and adding some additional contact information.
